🌏 Across Europe, an increasing number of museums, festivals, public events, and local initiatives demonstrate that accessibility is not an added service, but a fundamental part of the cultural experience. From Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia to Macedonia, these examples remind us that culture is at its strongest when it does not erect barriers, but opens doors for everyone.
✅️ Within the framework of the ID:CITIZEN project, we highlight several positive practices:
🇵🇱: Museums in Poland are a prime example of the fact that culture is truly for everyone. The POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews and the Warsaw Uprising Museum are excellent examples, offering full physical accessibility—including ramps, elevators, and accessible restrooms—as well as tactile elements and selected exhibits for touching, audio guides with audio descriptions for the blind and visually impaired, programs and tours in Polish Sign Language, and educational programs for visitors with diverse needs. Poland stands as a progressive model of institutionalized accessibility, thanks to a clear legal framework and well-developed practices within the cultural sector.
🇭🇺: In Hungary, culture is truly “borderless,” with a special focus on inclusion and equal access for all; accessibility at major cultural and public events is becoming increasingly visible and practical, particularly through a systemic approach that takes into account the diverse needs of people with disabilities. The Sziget Festival is a prime example of this, offering dedicated viewing platforms, organized transport, wheelchair rentals, support for the visually impaired, and sign language interpretation services. Additionally, there is a dedicated free campsite for visitors with disabilities—featuring accessible toilets and showers, a refrigerator for medication, and electricity for charging electric wheelchairs—with a simple, free registration process. At the same time, some museums in Budapest offer accessible informational and educational content for the hearing-impaired as well as multilingual audio guides, while state celebrations provide barrier-free zones and services for people with reduced mobility, sending a clear message that culture belongs to everyone.
🇸🇰: Slovakia is no less inclusive than other EU countries. Culture is increasingly assuming the role of a space open to all, driven by ever-clearer policies and practical accessibility measures at both local and national levels. In Bratislava, the “Bratislava Christmas” city program has introduced a zone dedicated to readings interpreted in Slovak Sign Language, as well as organized walks for the visually impaired, thereby making cultural events more accessible. Nationwide, galleries clearly communicate their accessibility; facilities are adapted for users of wheelchairs, mobility aids, and strollers, and some galleries allow guide dogs—an important signal of inclusive institutional planning. Furthermore, innovative formats—such as mobile-based audio stories—demonstrate that accessibility can also take the form of creative cultural content.
🇲🇰: The Infusion Festival is a cultural and artistic event in Skopje that aims to promote inclusion, diversity, and creativity in society. The festival offers a variety of activities and programs for people of all ages and abilities, including performances, theater productions, dance shows, music, exhibitions, creative workshops, sports activities, and games. Some events feature sign language interpretation and other inclusive tools for people with disabilities.
Infusion is not merely an entertainment festival, but also a platform for strengthening the community, supporting people with disabilities, and promoting positive social change, creating a space where everyone can participate and express themselves.
